Research has shown that Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) can be as successful as medicine in treating some people with mental health conditions. Due to its highly structured nature, CBT can be provided in a number of different formats other than talking therapies, such as software (online), self-help books and training materials.
It is important however that for anyone to fully benefit from CBT they need to ensure that they give a considerable level of commitment and involvement. CBT may not be suitable for people who have more complex mental health needs, or learning difficulties.
CBT on average can help up to 80% of people fully recover and even those who don't will get some worthwhile benefit. Sessions are normally either weekly or bi-weekly and take place over an average of 12 - 20 sessions, depending on the nature and severity of the problem.
